Skaters Stretches

September 29, 2016 by Brittany Baggett Leave a Comment

stretch Some people may not think to stretch before roller skating, however, the American Heart Association recognizes roller skating as a top rated aerobic exercise. That means, stretching before lacing up your skates can help you a great deal. According to Livestrong.com, “ stretching improves flexibility and makes up an important part of an exercise routine.” Take a look at a few stretches the Carousel Skate team has found that are good for stretching your hips, thighs and legs before stepping onto the rink.

Reclining Pigeon

This will stretch your lower back, hips, glutes and hamstrings. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Cross flexed right foot over left thigh, hook arms around left hamstring, and lift left foot a few inches, keeping back and shoulders on floor. Gently pull right leg in toward you, until you feel a stretch; hold for 45 seconds to two minutes. Lower back to start, switch legs and repeat.

Quad Stretch

This will stretch your hip flexors, quads and hamstrings. Kneel on floor with both knees bent, shins on floor. Put your right leg forward, so right knee is bent 90 degrees in front of you, right foot is flat on floor directly under knee, and left leg is still bent underneath you, parallel to right. Put both hands on top of right knee and press back hip forward, leaning into stretch, keeping torso upright. Hold for 30 seconds and release. Switch legs and repeat.

Foldover Stretch

This will stretch your neck, back, glutes, hamstrings and calves. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms by sides. Breathe out while you bend forward at the hips, lowering head toward floor, while keeping head, neck and shoulders relaxed. Wrap arms around backs of legs and hold anywhere from 45 seconds to two minutes. Bend knees and roll up slowly to release.

Health Benefits of Summer Skating

June 9, 2016 by gmg 2 Comments

Summer is coming and you can make the best of it if you plan now to make sure your kids participate in healthy indoor activities. When deciding which kind of activities will capture your kids attention this summer, don’t forget roller skating. Aside from being fun and social, (especially our Summer Skate Camp!), skating has many health benefits.

Improve Your Health (the Fun Way)

1ba25ea2b2271788ffc4c5e342d656f8Aerobically, putting on a pair of skates and racing around the rink provides the same benefits as running. Skating is also the equal of running when it comes to building lower body strength. But the impact on your joints is far less. Experts estimate that skating only has 50% of the impact on joints as running or jogging.

Skating is an excellent cross-training sport as well. Use skating as part of your overall routine in order to maintain general fitness and better prepare for a variety of individual and team sports. Many people use skating as part of program to lose or control weight. Skating burns calories as well as almost any other cardiovascular activity. In addition, the strength building benefit produces more muscle mass, which increases metabolic rate.

Building endurance is also something that can be done by regular roller skating or attending summer family skate sessions. Reduced stress and increased happiness are also very much part of the skating experience.

If you want to provide these benefits for your children as well, consider a skating camp this summer. Along with the health benefits of skating, a skating camp provides benefits to your child’s mental health as well.

What Summer Camp Can Do for Kids

May 12, 2016 by Taylor Brantner 4 Comments

If you’ve never been to camp, Summer Skate Camp may just sound like a fun way to keep your kids occupied this summer. And there’s no doubt that your kids will have more fun playing at Carousel Skate than they would camped in front of the TV. But according to child development researchers, the benefits of summer camp could change your child’s life.

Benefits of Summer Skate Camp

  1. boys playing silhouettePhysical fitness. Every parent has been there. After months of telling your kids, “You’re not just sitting around this summer!” that’s exactly what happens. It’s easy to let the kids get lost in technology, especially when mom and dad have a to-do list a mile long. At Summer Skate Camp, kids stay active all day. We start the morning with roller-skating, but it doesn’t end there. We give your kids a dose of sunshine, friendly competition, and games to encourage teamwork during summer camp at Carousel Skate.
  2. Make friends. Sometimes camp friends share a week together, then move on. Sometimes they develop bonds that last a lifetime. Either way, camp teaches kids important lessons about socialization, teamwork, and making friends. They’ll be talking about their new skating friends for the rest of the summer!
  3. Learn independence. Spending the day away from mom and dad may be hard at first, but it teaches kids valuable lessons about independence and problem solving. At skate camp, kids learn how to problem solve, resolve conflict, and have confidence in themselves and their abilities.

Summer is almost here. Time to get rolling! Call Carousel Skate for more information about Summer Skate Camp.
